パリの造船所で囚人たちが重労働を強いられるシーン。ここで物語の主要キャラクター、ジャン・バルジャンと彼の対立者ジャベールが登場する。バルジャンは19年前に姉と甥のためにパンを盗んだ罪で投獄され、ついに服役最終日を迎える。ジャベールは彼に出所証明書（黄色い仮釈放証）を渡し、今後毎月監査官と面会する条件付きで釈放する。バルジャンは造船所を去る。
