Third of Londoners suffer hygiene poverty, says charity

But seriously, it’s not about whether you have a cheap bar of soap, it’s whether you can wash bedsheets, or only have access to the cheapest or donated period products rather than the ones you need. Washing your bedding means an extra load and possibly a second hike or bus trip to the laundrette. When I was a kid, I washed bloody underwear in a bucket and I could only get darks and whites washed on alternate weeks. Be thankful if you genuinely don’t know what it entails.

When your clothes are old as well and you can’t afford new ones, they tend to hold on to smell and smell a lot worse a lot faster.

Just gonna remind everyone that hygiene products include feminine hygiene products (known to be expensive) and support for leaky bladders plus baby care e.g. diapers, laundry detergent, hair dye, and pretty anything that maintains health (including mental health), reduces odour, and reduces germs. I've not been able to afford feminine hygiene products in the past... it seriously hurts mental health and puts physical health at risk.

It's not just 'bars of soap' is it, it's things like cleaning products etc which add up. You haven't cracked their research here, we just exist in relatively affluent echo chambers. Considering 1/100 are homeless in the capital this comes as no surprise. The extent of poverty is truly sickening.

Yes I imagine they have extrapolated this stat from their users who are not representative of Londoners. I can well believe a lot of people have problems washing clothes though, trying to dry clothes in a cold damp shared house is a PITA

There is zero excuse for being stinky, I've lived in absolute poverty without a washing machine or any money for gas and I've still managed to wash and dry my clothes and wash myself .

We got rid of most free public bathing facilities. This is the inevitable result.
