'London is not what it was': How suspicious social media accounts are changing the narrative of the capital

Someone or some country is flooding social media with negative content around London , it’s amazing how many friends who live abroad ask if I’m ok ( I live in London) and how bad it’s got (they haven’t visited in years). A dark force is destabilising western institutions & stable cities that represent multiculturalism. No city is perfect , London is not perfect, but my god it is without question one of the best cities in the world

誰か、あるいはどこかの国が、ロンドンに関するネガティブな情報をSNSに大量投下している気がする。海外に住む友人たちから『大丈夫？』と聞かれることが増えた（彼らは何年もロンドンに来ていない）。多文化主義を象徴する安定した都市や西側の制度を不安定化させようとする暗い力がある。完璧な都市なんてないし、ロンドンも完璧じゃない。でも、それでも間違いなく世界最高クラスの都市だ。

American here- visited in ‘97, ‘14 and this past summer. Had more fun than ever. Was solo for 3 of the 7 days and traversed the city and multiple areas. Never felt unsafe as a woman alone.

Glad you enjoyed it. I (67M) go to London as often as I can and explore. There is no area that I would avoid. I live 30 miles outside London and love the atmosphere. Never felt uncomfortable or threatened. The same is true for the other places I visit Birmingham, Glasgow, Bradford, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield and Edinburgh. “London is not what it was” says a person who has never been to Peckham in the last 20 years. Thank God London isn’t what it was LOL

Peckham was like how rye-lane is now but everywhere lol. It was definitely embarrassing to tell people you lived there. People wouldn't trouble you generally if you weren't on "road" or hanged with people that did. But if you grew up there you were very likely to know or be friends with someone that was.

昔のペッカムは、今のライ・レーンみたいな感じが街全体に広がってた（笑）。住んでるって言うのが恥ずかしいレベルだった。いわゆる“ロード”に関わってなければ基本的に絡まれないけど、そこで育ったなら、そういう人を知ってたり友達だったりするのは普通だった。

Of course London has changed. Most places do. Theres been positive and negative changes. A lot of working class people cannot afford to live here, there’s less community. However, I personally feel a lot safer in London now, the tube runs 24 hours on weekends, even more things to do now. There’s definitely no war zone. The weird thing is I’ve been to certain places in the UK that are grim but yet everyone acts like London is the grimmest place.

ロンドンが変わったのは当然。どこだって変わる。良い変化も悪い変化もある。労働者階級が住めなくなり、コミュニティは減った。でも個人的には今の方がずっと安全だと感じるし、週末は地下鉄も24時間動くし、やることも増えた。戦場なんかじゃない。不思議なのは、ロンドンよりよほど荒んだ場所がイギリス国内にあるのに、なぜかロンドンだけが最悪扱いされること。

London has changed. A lot. Particularly if you're working class or poor. Some for the better, mostly for the worst. Overall though, it's pretty evident London isn't a war zone that is falling apart, most of the issues are issues faced all over the country. I grew up in Finsbury park in the 80s and 90s. It was common to see winos passed out drunk on the pavement, I still remember one elderly wino being naked from the waist down, unconscious as it was snowing. Things like this are thankfully a lot more rare.

ロンドンは大きく変わった。特に労働者階級や貧しい人にとっては。良くなった面もあるけど、多くは悪化した。それでも、ロンドンが崩壊した戦場じゃないのは明らかで、問題の多くは全国共通だ。80〜90年代にフィンズベリー・パークで育ったけど、路上で酔いつぶれてる人なんて日常だった。雪の中、下半身裸で意識を失ってる老人を見たのも覚えてる。そういう光景が今はずっと少ないのは救い。

Just get off social media. Job done.

SNSをやめればいい。それで解決。

I don’t use it half as much as I used to and definitely recommend stepping away from social media. However IMO that is not the solution for disinformation. People are too too too gullible to just let it sit there festering unchecked. When it is, it has real life consequences in society. It needs to be countered strongly ideally through fact checking and claim dissection. Easily crumbles. Problem is it’s tiresome and tedious doing it against the barrage of fake news; their strategy is just to continue pumping it out, with the idea being debunkers will get tired and stop, and eventually the false narrative will prevail. In the same way these fake news factories have been set up to be an almost semi-automated machine (often working half way across the world in India or Dubai etc), I do really hope debunkers use automation/ML/AI etc to keep on top of countering this junk.

自分も昔ほどSNSは使ってないし、距離を置くのは勧める。 でもそれは誤情報対策の解決策じゃないと思う。人はあまりに騙されやすく、放置すれば現実社会に影響が出る。 事実確認や主張の分解で強く対抗すべきで、実際それは簡単に崩せる。 問題は、フェイクニュースの物量に対抗するのがひたすら疲れること。向こうの戦略は出し続けて、反論する側が疲れてやめるのを待つこと。 フェイクニュース工場が半自動的に運用されているのと同じように、反証側も自動化・ML・AIなどを使って対抗し続けてほしい。
