New contactless stations expansion means train passengers to London face soaring fares

This is what you get when you ask for fare simplification I'm afraid. Treasury can't have the cost go down. This is why fares rises can be level... Because all the cheaper fares are withdrawn.

They introduced contactless on c2c and the cost of a peak return went down by a few quid. ETA pretty sure no ticket option resulted in a price increase.

It's not so much the actual tickets getting more expensive it's just that often many types of tickets are just completely withdrawn from certain stations or the times of peak times have changed so people can no longer use off peak tickets when they could previously. Effectively increases the prices yet the fares remain the same.

実際に切符そのものが値上げされているというより、特定の駅で多くの切符種別が廃止されたり、ピーク時間の定義が変わって、以前はオフピークで使えた切符が使えなくなる。結果として実質値上げなのに、名目上の運賃は変わっていない。

This has happened in LNER routes. My fare has tripled because advance off peak single has been removed. Thanks simplification!

I fully understand that some of the people referenced in the article may end up paying more than they do now and that is unfortunate. But I also support anything that makes train fares simpler or closer to the way that London does it with a clear touch-in cut-off for peak/off-peak times. As for using a different station (or a more inconvenient route) so you can get a cheaper fare, I used to do that many years ago by getting off at Whitechapel and walking to my office in the city to avoid the Zone 1 fare, or taking the Overground, or waiting for 7pm to get the tube back, etc.

I do the same. Get off at whitechapel rather than liverpool st, walk an additional 15 mins to the office, get my 10000+ steps a day, more time to finish my podcasts and save £3.20 every day 😎

I used to do this too back when I worked near Liverpool Street! Felt strange at first but then realized the walk isn't that long at all. I think that stretch from Whitechapel to zone 1 is the only feasible route that this can be applied to sadly. I've since moved jobs numerous times, each time further west into zone 1. Rendering this saving no longer doable.

But the very fact that to get to work you have to pay a higher fare is ludicrous and that to get home without paying it you have to stay later also is. I understand the difficulties the TfL has but it penalises the people who work. I’m generally not bothered as I cycle I but I do feel bad for the people on effectively minimum wage having to pay outrageous sums just to get to work as they can’t afford to live closer to work.

When I moved right outside zone 2, I would walk 17 mins to Canning town so I pay the lower fare, but eventually abandoned that just because how easy it was to get to Custom House and take the Lizzy line. 10 mins or under to Liverpool Street is just unbeatable.

I think the issue is that a lot of rail operators have scrapped their evening peaks as it was causing the first train after peak hours to be carnage. But with any ticketing system, you can do what you want. They’ve obviously decided that’s ok.

What is the problem here, exactly. For most working people, they’re travelling within peak times. So they will use contactless. Anyone else can buy a paper ticket, or buy via one of the apps, where they would get any discounts for railcards. I fail to see how this is an issue, unless people absolutely have to be spoonfed literally everything

Reading the article it states that they’ve changed the off peak train time from Reigate following introduction of contactless. However the next station towards London, Redhill, doesn’t have contactless and retains the earlier off peak fare. That makes no sense. The same fare should be available wherever you get a paper ticket or choose contactless.

It’s the change to when off peak tickets can be used. For me, off peak ticket validity is now too late in the morning to be useful. And, to add insult to injury, they have now added peak fairs to the evening commute. So, in short, commuting has become more expensive.

オフピーク切符が使える時間帯の変更が問題。自分の場合、朝のオフピーク開始が遅すぎて使い物にならない。さらに追い打ちで、夕方の通勤にもピーク運賃が追加された。 要するに、通勤が高くなった。

If you drive you just go, you don't have to think about this nonsense. If we want to get people out of cars and on to road, we need to spoon-feed. Make it easy. Make it affordable. Most people don't want to think about this shit.

車なら何も考えずに行ける。こんなくだらないことを考えなくていい。人を車から公共交通に移したいなら、分かりやすく、安くするしかない。大半の人はこんなこと考えたくない。

I’m in Surrey and whenever I go to London it’s vastly cheaper to drive to an Elizabeth line station in the suburbs like West Drayton, park there for free, then get the train into central. It’s about a third the price fuel included

Sorry you're right, I just realised you can only associate it with your oyster card not your contactless, works with the same system but technically two different things 😅

This cost the Southend line its super off peak fare. Unless you’re rich, tapping in instead of using the app is not worth multiple £ for every trip to London. A really insensitive move against ordinary people by this government.

この変更でサウスエンド線はスーパー・オフピーク運賃を失った。金持ちでない限り、アプリを使わずにタッチインするのは毎回数ポンド損。一般市民に対して本当に無神経な政府の対応だ。
