Question My wife and I went to London this past week for a Christmas trip. It was a great time but we had an interesting experience that I just can’t stop thinking about. Our AirBnB had a full kitchen/dining area so we decided we wanted to eat Christmas dinner there. We ordered a Christmas meal from Harrods and went to pick it up there on the 23rd. When we went on the 23rd we walked around for awhile and decided to get some coffee/snack at the coffee bar. The bar was completely full so we waited for a spot for about 10 minutes. As we were waiting, a man in an orange suit with tattooed facial hair (and too much perfume) walked to the front of the line and was immediately seated by the hostess at one of two reserved seats. We were seated a few minutes later right next to the man. As we were looking over the menu, a male bartender gave the man a latte with foam art that said “Boss” in cursive. The man sat at the bar and took several videos of himself on Snapchat before putting two packs of sugar in his coffee. After taking a sip of the coffee he told the male bartender it was awful and got up and walked away. My wife and I then placed our orders and about 10 minutes later the man sat back down. The hostess came up to him and apologized for something. She looked incredibly nervous. The male bartender then gave him another latte which he seemed to like better. An older man then sat next to him in the second reserved spot and placed an order with a young female bartender. The female bartender complained to the old man about something having to do with the male bartender. The old man said “he won’t do anything to you. You’re under my protection.” At this point I felt like I was in some sort of mafia movie. There are people in ridiculous outfits being presented with drinks that say “boss” by nervous waitstaff while telling them to relax because they are under their protection. Does anyone have any context for this situation and what was going on? It was just so strange and I keep thinking about it.
質問 妻と私は先週、クリスマス旅行でロンドンに行きました。とても楽しかったのですが、どうしても考えずにはいられない不思議な体験がありました。 私たちのAirBnBにはちゃんとしたキッチンとダイニングがあったので、そこでクリスマスディナーを食べようと決めました。Harrodsでクリスマス用の食事を注文して、23日に受け取りに行きました。 23日に行ったとき、しばらく店内を歩き回ってから、コーヒーバーでコーヒーか軽食を取ろうと思いました。バーは完全に満席だったので、席が空くのを10分ほど待っていました。待っている間に、オレンジ色のスーツを着て、（香水をつけすぎで）顔の髭がタトゥーっぽく見える男が列の先頭に来て、ホステスにより即座に、予約席2つのうち1つに座らされました。 私たちは数分後に案内され、その男のすぐ隣に座りました。メニューを見ていると、男性バーテンダーがその男に、ラテのフォームアートで筆記体の「Boss」と書かれたものを渡しました。男はカウンターで座り、Snapchatで自分の動画を何本も撮ったあと、砂糖を2袋コーヒーに入れました。一口飲むと、男性バーテンダーに「ひどい」と言って立ち上がり、そのまま去りました。 その後、私たちは注文をし、約10分後にその男が戻ってきてまた座りました。ホステスが彼のところに来て、何かについて謝っていました。彼女はものすごく緊張しているように見えました。すると男性バーテンダーが別のラテを渡し、今度の方が気に入ったようでした。さらに、年配の男がもう1つの予約席に座り、若い女性バーテンダーに注文しました。その女性バーテンダーは、男性バーテンダーに関する何かについて年配の男に不満を言っていました。すると年配の男は「彼は君に何もしない。君は私の保護下にいる」と言いました。 この時点で、私はまるでマフィア映画の中にいるような気分でした。ばかげた格好の人たちが、緊張したスタッフから「boss」と書かれた飲み物を出され、さらに「大丈夫、保護されてるから落ち着け」と言われている。 この状況に何か心当たりや背景がある人はいますか？ とにかく変で、ずっと考えてしまいます。

Could be anything really. Don't think it's worth stewing over: Harrods is owned by Qataris and there's loads of extremely wealthy and powerful people that knock around there, and probably has its own ecosystem in terms of locals/customers/people with influence who go there regularly or have their hand in the pot.

Harrods has been tacky and for tourists only for decades. Although oddly their online shopping platform went through a phase of being cheaper than Currys and other mainstream retailers!
緊張しているスタッフが「boss」って書かれた飲み物を、変な格好の人に献上している 典型的な、成金の痛い見栄っ張りムーブだね。 Harrodsなんて何十年も前からダサくて観光客向けだよ。とはいえ妙なことに、オンライン通販だけは一時期Currysとか他の大手量販店より安かった時期があったけど！

国際的な金持ち連中は、「成金」なんて言葉じゃ全然足りないレベルだよ。ブランド名とかピカピカした物に、恥も外聞もなく金を突っ込む底なし沼みたいな存在。
Better to be nouveau than to have never been riche at all.

One of the great aspects to London is it has so many worlds which I can be aware of but completely avoid. The marvels of Harrods and its population of uber-rich guillotine dodgers being one of them.

harrods went from being the department store for british upper middle class families and gentry, to being flashy fodder for the international ultra wealthy.
Harrodsは、イギリスの上位中流の家庭やジェントリ（地方の名家）向けデパートから、国際的な超富裕層のための派手なエサ場みたいな存在に変わってしまった。
It's nightmarish to shop there now. I used to like the food hall in Harrods but now even the charm has gone from that. Same for Selfridges. Both are full of people who are insecure and image obsessed, which makes it unpleasant to shop there. They shove and push around because they feel lesser. As someone who isn't super wealthy but doesn't feel lesser. I CBA putting up with it.
今のHarrodsで買い物するのは悪夢。昔はフードホールが好きだったけど、今はそこからさえ魅力が消えた。Selfridgesも同じ。 どっちも、劣等感が強くて見栄に取り憑かれた人だらけで、買い物が不快になる。自分が下だと感じてるから、押したり突き飛ばしたりする。私は超金持ちじゃないけど、自分を下だとも思ってない。そんな連中に付き合う気力はない（I CBA）。
A relative used to work in the food halls, between the Fayed years and the Qatari makeover so I occasionally visited to take advantage of the staff discount. Fayed was a POS as a person and had his face as a pharaoh all over the Egyptian escalator but the food halls were beautifully decorated. The Qs covered it all up, then turned much of the rest of the ground floor into an uber-tacky bling-fest.
親戚がフードホールで働いてたことがあって、フェイド時代とカタールによる改装の間の時期ね。だから社員割引を使うためにたまに行ってた。フェイドは人としてクソ（POS）で、エジプト風エスカレーターのあちこちにファラオ姿の自分の顔を飾ってた。でもフードホール自体は美しく装飾されてたんだよね。ところが“Q（カタール勢）”が全部覆い隠して、さらに1階の大部分を超ダサいギラギラ祭りに変えちゃった。
Horrible place. Never enjoyed a retail experience there. Try fortnum & mason or liberty. Very london, but pleasant.
最悪の場所。 あそこで買い物して楽しかったことなんて一度もない。 Fortnum & MasonかLibertyに行ってみて。いかにもロンドンって感じだし、しかも快適。
Agreed - F&M and Liberty are shoppable, genuinely nice stores. Harrods is a theme park for Saudi tourists and content creators.

Typical Harrods area experience. For most of 2025 there was a literal gold Ferrari parked opposite. It looked as tacky as you'd imagine.
Harrods周辺あるあるだね。2025年の大半、向かいに文字どおり金色のフェラーリが停まってたよ。想像どおりのド派手ダサさだった。
Fayed and his mates were definitely gropey (my friend worked there and was most relieved to be able to move to being behind a food hall counter, ie out of reach) and certainly tried to sleep with many of the female staff. I guess the court case will confirm if it got worse than that.
フェイドと取り巻きは、間違いなくベタベタ触るタイプだった（友人が働いてて、フードホールのカウンターの“中”に移れて＝手が届かない場所になって、ものすごくホッとしたって言ってた）。それに、多くの女性スタッフと寝ようとしてたのも確実。裁判で、それ以上ひどかったかどうかが確認されるんじゃないかな。
Harrods is a gaudy tourist trap full of wankers. Hope that helps!

It changed so much in the past 15-16 years. I used to go there a lot when my children were babies, the children’s section was of course high end but more heritage brands and less Gucci type designer bling. We bought our very normal pram there, and later school uniforms! The toy kingdom was amazing, truly massive, and the children loved looking around. They had an annual Christmas parade which was so festive and you could get tickets to see Father Christmas. Today it’s only labels. Toys have been relegated to a tiny section. No Christmas parade and I’m not sure the have a Father Christmas anymore - it became black card holders ie top clients only at one point and then I lost track of it as my children aged out of all of that. Like someone said here, Londoners typically avoid Harrods these days. Feels like any luxury mall anywhere in the world, designer bling and marble, nothing British about it.
ここ15〜16年で本当に大きく変わった。子どもたちが赤ちゃんだった頃はよく行っていて、子ども向けフロアはもちろん高級だったけど、もっと伝統的なブランドが多くて、Gucciみたいなデザイナーのギラギラは少なかった。普通のベビーカーも買ったし、その後は学校の制服も買った！おもちゃ売り場（Toy Kingdom）は素晴らしくて、本当に広大で、子どもたちは見て回るのが大好きだった。毎年クリスマスのパレードもあってすごくお祭り感があり、サンタ（Father Christmas）に会うチケットも取れた。 今はラベル（ブランド）ばかり。おもちゃは小さな区画に追いやられた。クリスマスのパレードもないし、サンタに会える企画も、もうやってるか分からない。以前はブラックカード所持者＝トップ顧客限定になった時期もあって、子どもが成長してからは私も追わなくなった。 ここでも言われてる通り、最近ロンドンっ子はだいたいHarrodsを避ける。世界中どこにでもある高級モールみたいで、デザイナーのギラつきと大理石ばかり。イギリスらしさが何もない。
